The first stage production of Kanya aur Kahaniyaa, titled "Thinking Out Loud," drew inspiration from their social media endeavor, "Say it with Poetry," inviting normal people to share their poetry on themes of "Conflicts & Dreams” in 3 languages - English, Hindi & Marathi. On encountering an enthusiastic response from the audience, the team opted to voice select poems on their social media platforms, with the help of voice-over artists. Additionally, several other poems were curated in their experimental poetry performance,"Thinking Out Loud."
The story of a young adult lady of four and twenty looking for reassurance in her inner world of self-doubt.
A fight, a revelation or a thought - that emerged from a simple question of "who am I?" - How often do we allow ourselves to Think Out Loud?
A glimpse of the poetry used in the performance;
The young adult lady of four & Twenty - by Kavya Venkateshwaran
She yearns for a stop, a destination, a purpose,
Experienced in little but a reassured surface,
Her losses far outweighing her gains,
The first decade of adulthood spent so far in pain.
To add to her woes is a recessionary industry,
An aftermath of a tough quarantine,
Helpless, hopeless, jobless, and more,
Her indoor degrees, no better than stone.
The story of Kavya is inspired by journey of several artist friends, making it through in today’s world of hustle and social media. The self doubt of the character is a symbolic representation of most of us in the society today, we are so latched to our work and “successes” that it becomes difficult to separate ourselves from it and stand up as an individual.
As an artist myself, on most days the self doubt is so overwhelming that it hampers my process of creating work, it makes me question the parts of me which personally I still wish to discover and understand.
After a not-so-good show, I asked my mom,“Should I keep doing this? Should I still keep putting up shows in the future?” and she told me,“
That is exactly what you should, today was not a day of reassurance, which is fine, but i’m sure there was a revelation, something more to learn about yourself ”.
And the thought stuck with me, It got my thinking - where does all my reassurance come from?
The thought further led me to have open conversation with like minded people, mainly artist. The question of understanding self doubt and constant reassurance from the audience took me deeper into realising that both are mutually inclusive.
it further inspired me to develop a character like Kavya in Thinking Out Loud.
